In an age of impressive technological creations such as bluetooth, Instagram and smart homes, it’s a wonder why humble remnants of history are more popular than ever. Antique pieces can come in the form of paintings, furniture, and knick-knacks, but vintage clothing is one of the most exciting. Movie starlets, supermodels and other fashionistas have influenced the fashion world, and their fearlessness is constantly inspiring women. Whether you’re going for New York’s hip metropolitan vibes or London’s posh looks, vintage clothing allows us to pay homage to the countless fashion icons who’ve taken our breath away.

British (Fashion) Invasion

Jane Birkin and the revolutionary Twiggy were quintessential figures for all the hottest British fashion trends of the 60s. Bright mini-dresses with Peter Pan collars, flat astronaut boots, flared patterned pants, colored tights… no stone was left unturned when it came to style. Finding the right items to create such an outfit nowadays sounds simple, but you need to know where to look. Try finding stores that specialize in clothing at least 20 years old, classifying them as vintage. While your usual thrift or charity stores have some older clothes, they also carry a lot of newer, more modern cuts. Connoisseur stores do the work for you by finding items to sell in their outlets, but can be pricey. And when you can’t think of what to wear for that Pattie Boyd outfit you have pictured in your mind, find inspiration and ideas to help guide you.

Notorious L.B.D.

Audrey Hepburn’s iconic gown from Breakfast at Tiffany’s solidified the “little black dress” wardrobe staple forever. Refined sophistication and class exuded from the simple, form-fitting dress which became one of the actress’s most popular looks. As it’s one of the easiest outfits to replicate for any occasion, start by finding a vintage black dress in quality material with no patterns, particularly of the late 50s, early 60s. Hubert de Givenchy’s original creation was floor-length and made of Italian silk, but any length or fabric that’s comfortable for you will do the job. Older resale stores usually have a jewelry case, so it’s worth glancing over to see if they have bracelets or headbands to imitate her fabulous pearl necklace. Rather than copy her expensive elbow-length opera gloves, throw on a pair of low black heels to finish your ensemble.

Menswear Or Womenswear?

Many women have adorned the red carpet in styles that were once thought of as taboo, like tuxedos and men’s jackets. Women like Brigitte Bardot, Bianca Jagger, and Grace Jones are just a few examples of the ladies who stood up against fashion rules and helped transition the styles from manly to feminine. Waltz over to the men’s section and find a silhouette (preferably dating from the 70s or 80s) that compliments your shape but also has room to move. Going a size up with your jacket or pants gives an effortlessly chic feel, while still making a bold statement. Elevate these contemporary cuts with slightly with patterns like plaid and houndstooth. Omitting a button-up underneath the blazer leaves a very alluring décolletage for a touch of femininity; play it up, and find what works for you.

Fashion reflects artwork, culture, and history. Many have walked this Earth in the finest golds and the rarest silvers; others in warm velvet and soft satin. Throughout history, there have been muses and icons we rave about, and whose inspiration we wear on our sleeves to this day. Shopping vintage allows us to pay respect to the ones who came before us by incorporating their unique fashion sense into our own individuality.
