The Amazon is burning, over 73,000 fires have been reported this year and the number is growing. What is the cause? Deforestation, clearing the forest for agriculture and cattle farming. Unfortunately, now we are all paying the ultimate price.

So as the world watches, we wanted to pinpoint specific acts that we can each do to help with this international tragedy.

#1 Educate

This precious land that has been called the lungs of the planet. According to Science Alert:

As the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon plays a crucial role in keeping our planet’s carbon-dioxide levels in check. Plants and trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air in their process of photosynthesis.

This is why the Amazon, which covers 2.1 million square miles, is often referred to as the “lungs of the planet”: The forest produces 20 percent of the oxygen in our planet’s atmosphere.

Other ways to educate yourself is to follow important civic groups such as these for updates and progress on the situation:

We depend on rainforests to regulate our climate, filter pollutants and provide a home for millions of communities and threatened species, but rainforests around the world are under threat. Repost • @amazonfrontlines URGENT: Fires are raging across the Amazon! The Amazon produces more than 20% of the world’s oxygen, it is home to hundreds of indigenous nations and millions of plant and animal species and it is considered vital in slowing down climate change. The Brazilian Amazon is now burning down in flames. Wildfires often occur in the dry season in Brazil but fires are also deliberately started in efforts to illegally clear forest for cattle ranching. According to National Institute for Space Research the large number of wildfires could not be attributed to the dry season or natural phenomena alone. Indigenous communities across the Amazon are fighting to protect their lands against destruction. We have to stand with indigenous frontline communities and support them! @coiabamazonia @guajajarasonia @greenpeacebrasil #StopBolsonaro #PrayforAmazonia

#2 Donate

There are two ways you can make immediate donations.

The first is through the Rainforest Alliance. As their website shares:

Rainforests are being destroyed every day, putting the countless species that depend on them in jeopardy. Your support helps us fight habitat loss and climate change, working with local communities to conserve forests and prosper. Together, we’ve saved over 125 million acres in 74 nations—and we’re just getting started.

🚨Amazon S.O.S. Part II🚨 Many members of our alliance have been asking what actions we are taking in response to the crisis in the Brazilian Amazon (which is now spreading into Bolivia and a region of the Peruvian Amazon where our longstanding partner communities live; 🔥 knows no borders). In addition to redirecting 100% of donations made in August via link in bio to frontline groups in the Brazilian Amazon, we are mobilizing our global alliance for a vigorous, multi-faceted crisis response. We’re working with our partners—including multi-national companies, farmers, governments, scientists, and Indigenous and forest communities around the world—to put pressure on the Brazilian government to conserve the Amazon for the good of people and nature. 🌎That means, first and foremost, defending it against illegal logging, destructive slash-and-burn agriculture, and other existential threats. In addition, we’re harnessing international concern over the fires to intensify our ongoing advisory work with companies that source commodities from Brazil; leveraging our position as respected expert-advocates to advance responsive policy and regulation within the European Union to influence the Brazilian government; and urging business leaders around the world to embrace the Accountability Framework initiative, which provides guidance and benchmarks for sustainable supply-chain transformation. 💚 Work is love made visible, and we have infinite love for the Amazon. 🌳 📷 @mohsinkazmitakespictures (Amazon, Brazil-Peru border, 2015) #prayforamazonia #savetheamazon #rainforestalliance #climatejustice #climateaction

The second is through the WWF For Your World organization. They set up an emergency appeal for funds. As their website states, their goals are the following:

  • Identify the most affected areas and the communities most in need of our support
  • Support community services to reduce the fires and offer emergency relief where it’s needed
  • Raise awareness to take action against the fires and deforestation
  • Advocate for stronger laws in the Brazilian parliament

Did you know the mighty Amazon relies on its size to function as a humid rainforest? We don’t need to chop down any more trees. Help keep our jungles standing by choosing deforestation-free products ✔️ #ShareOurPlanet @OurPlanet 🌴💚

#3 Reduce Meat & Dairy Consumption

According to The Guardian, reducing our meat and dairy intake is the most significant way to reduce our environmental impact. As they explain:

Avoiding meat and dairy products is the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact on the planet. The new research shows that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% – an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined – and still feed the world.
